Watch this short video on cloud computing. What are the advantages that are offered as selling features? What does the video suggest is wrong with more traditional applications?
The next video is about privacy and security challenges that are related to cloud computing. Take a few minutes and watch this short video. What are the implications for teachers using cloud based apps? Cloud apps are convenient and have many advantages as outlined in the video above, but there are also some serious privacy concerns that must be considered.
Are teachers responsible for teaching students about privacy and security? If they are using cloud based apps in the core subject areas even though it is not part of the curriculum?
Who is responsible for a student's data if he or she uses a cloud based app in the classroom?

The next video is an interview with Jaron Lanier. It is long, but if you have not read any of Lanier's work it is worth the time it takes to watch it.
Jaron Lanier is a well known technologist and he is one of the founders of virtual reality. Lanier is critical of many aspects of cloud computing, particularly free cloud computing. According to Lanier, the people who own the data centres on which cloud computing relies are ultimately getting more power and wealth while we are losing our personal freedoms. I liken this to Charlie's grandfather loosing his job at the toothpaste factory in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He ultimately gets a better job fixing the machines but one machine repair job does not make up for many displaced factory workers. Meanwhile the CEOs of the toothpaste factories are getting richer.
Jaron Lanier says that our future is too high a price to pay for our free apps. What are our social responsibilities regarding using cloud apps rather than a locally housed IT department? Is this something we should even be concerned about?
